What is cursed text?
Cursed text is writing that looks corrupted — letters sprouting stray marks, accents bleeding above and below the line, words that seem to decay as you read them. The mechanism is Unicode combining diacritics: marks designed to stack accents onto letters for the world’s languages. Nothing stops you stacking many of them onto one letter, and at three or four deep the text starts looking possessed. The deeper story is in Unicode explained.
Cursed text and zalgo text are close relatives: zalgo is the maximal, dripping-down-the-page version, while cursed spans the whole range from a light flicker of corruption to full digital rot.
How to curse your text in 3 steps
1. Type your text
Short phrases corrupt best — each letter gains marks.
2. Pick an intensity
Light, medium or heavy — plus subtler single-mark styles.
3. Copy & paste
Every re-render is random, so regenerate until it feels right.
Choosing your level of corruption
| Intensity | Feel | Readability | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light | A flicker — something is slightly wrong | Fully readable | Usernames, bios, subtle unease |
| Medium | Actively decaying | Readable with effort | Comments, Halloween posts, ARGs |
| Heavy | Full zalgo — text as haunting | Barely readable | Maximum shock value, art |
| Single-mark | Dotted, slashed or tilde-struck | Perfectly readable | Controlled corruption that never breaks layout |
A practical rule: the more of the message that matters, the lighter the curse. A heavy-cursed punchline lands; a heavy-cursed paragraph gets scrolled past.
Where cursed text works (and where it gets filtered)
- Discord — the spiritual home of cursed text: messages, nicknames and channel names all render the marks.
- Instagram & TikTok comments — light and medium survive; extremely heavy stacks are sometimes trimmed by the apps.
- Twitter (X) — posts and display names accept cursed text; it pairs disturbingly well with normal-looking threads.
- Gaming chats — many games cap combining marks to protect their UI, so use light intensity; the glitch text generator has game-safe alternatives.

Where to go next
Cursed text sits at the chaotic end of the mark-stacking family — stacked text uses the same machinery with discipline, and crossed out text reduces it to a single precise line. If you want horror aesthetics that survive strict game filters, the glitch text generator and the gaming fonts hub have safer weapons. The rest of the arsenal is catalogued at the text effects hub.
